How a Character is Developed in Illustration

Character development for "Lisbeth and the Littering Ladybugs"One of the key elements of storytelling is character development. It’s especially critical for children’s books published to young readers ages 3-6. While the colorful illustrations may initially capture the eye of young readers, it’s often the connection with the characters that resonates most with children. So, it’s important when developing any character to ensure that the initial sketches – that will eventually lead to the final illustration – reflect the heart and soul of the character within the flow of the story progression. The story may provide a hint at who a character may be, but the final illustration helps children see them more clearly, as well as identify aspects of themselves within those characters.
I’m thrilled to be working with artist and illustrator Maya Penzlik. She is a talented artist who resides in Montreal Canada. Maya creates whimsical illustrations featuring colorful characters and dreamy landscapes. She draws inspiration from her cherished childhood memories and her desire to explore new and exciting places.
Together, Maya and I are working on something very special. Building off initial story and design boards, Maya is carefully drafting character and scene sketches. We are in the process of finalizing the look and feel of the characters  before Maya moves into the illustration stage, which will parallel book design to ensure written and visual story alignment.
We can’t wait to share Lisbeth’s magical world with you this Fall. So, stay tuned. A sneak peak at Lisbeth and her friends is coming very soon!
